Esa Approach to the Prevention of Stress-corrosion Cracking in Spacecraft Hardware

چکیده
The present work addresses the importance of stresscorrosion cracking (SCC) as an insidious failure phenomenon which affects the integrity and safety of spacecraft hardware. SCC requirements are particularly important when selecting metallic materials for payloads, these being subjected to long term storage before flight. The ESA general approach to the determination of SCC susceptibility and selection of materials is presented with reference to the ECSS applicable standards. Test methodology, classification and qualification of materials are discussed in the light of the requirements for the prevention of SCC in spacecraft hardware.

Stress Corrosion Cracking Detection of Sensitized Stainless Steel 304 in Chloride Media by Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to detect stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in stainless steel 304 alloy exposed to an aqueous environment at 120 °C. Stainless steel 304 alloy as u-bend was tested in the solution that contains 40 weight percent of magnesium chloride. U-bended samples were prepared according to ASTM G30. EIS measurements were always performed simultaneously o...
متن کاملAn Outrun Competition of Corrosion Fatigue and Stress Corrosion Cracking on Crack Initiation in a Compressor Blade
First row rotating blades of four axial-flow compressors were prematurely fractured. Previous investigations showed that the site atmosphere contains corrosive compounds which lead to an increase in possibility of pitting on the blades. It was also revealed that the crack was originated from two corrosion pits. Thus, this work is conducted to ascertain which of fatigue or stress corrosion crack...
متن کاملAn Investigation on Corrosion and Stress Corrosion Cracking initiation of a Ferritic Stainless Steel in a Tertiary Amine Solution
The present study focused on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and corrosion behavior of ferritic stainless steel (grade 430) in activated methyl diethanolamine (aMDEA) solution, which is classified as a tertiary amine. In this regard, cyclic polarization and U-bend tests were performed in CO2 loaded aMDEA with different concentrations at 25 and 70 °C to observe corrosion behavior and ...
